Black Peel Off Masks : Do they work?

by - 10 November

You've probably clicked on one or a couple of ads on Facebook (who can blame you? Those ads are so well made to be honest). A few might be beauty products- a cushion compact, natural lashes, a mermaid makeup brush kit or a peel off mask maybe?

Those satisfyingly gross peel-off masks that you've probably used at least once, maybe in the form of nose strips, have been resurrected. Liquid masks that you air dry and after a while peel-off. Along with the dried mask are your blackheads/whiteheads and tiny facial hairs, revealing baby-smooth skin.

This type of mask has been around a while in most Asian countries, even longer in Japan. These black masks are made from charcoal which according to the beauty community absorb/trap oil and help aid acne-prone skin.

You can expect the masks to help unclog pores and absorb environmental pollutants, oil, and dirt from the skin. Charcoal is especially good for people with acne and blackheads as it can help reduce excess oil - Dr. Jaliman. (source)

Some articles point out the harm of these peel-off masks, which admittedly, can cause problems when not done correctly.

General consensus say :

- This should be used at least once a month only!
- Blackheads/whiteheads won't come off with the mask, if you have none to begin with.
- Proper skincare regimen should be done in conjunction with the mask.
- Essentially the top-most layer of the skin is exfoliated (by stripping off with along with the mask) so overuse will cause more problems rather than aid in keeping it healthy.
- Charcoal is best for clearing dirt, pollution, excess oils out of clogged pores. Even natural/homemade beauty sites love them.

If you're still reading, that means you're interested in the beauty darling that is the 'black beauty mask' / charcoal peel-off mask. Here's another internet-famous one -

Ingredients: Deionized Water, Polyvinyl Alcohol, K30, Alcohol, Herba Portulacae Extract, Methyl, Menthol, Camphor, Borneol.

How to use

First dry the cleansed area and apply the masque on your desired area (avoid youreyebrows, eyes and lips). Peel it off after 20-30 minutes. If you want to achieve the best results apply toner so as to tighten and cleanse the pores. - The Crystal Secret

Cruelty-free | Safe for sensitive skin

Along with the usual claims of peel-off beauty masks, these according to The Crystal Secret, are NOT tested on animals! with a 30 day money back guarantee.

Happy masking!

P.S. I've tried the Daiso/Japan Home ones and they work pretty standard. I'm more into (natural) beaded exfoliants like St. Ives and gel exfoliants like Cure and 3W Clinic's collagen ones. My sensitive skin is more amicable with these types of exfoliants.
